Stay Safe At The Beach This Memorial Day Weekend!

Now that the weather is warming up, more people head to the coast and so do the ticks. Whether they survived the winter a the beach, hitched a ride on a bird, animal or human - these ticks love the moisture and long seagrass.

Top tips

Hey everyone!

My nephew (11) is going camping with school next month. Can you share any tips for preventing tick bites. His mom is super paranoid and you guys are such a great source of info. Thanks in advance :)

Hi Deborah!

Totally get the concern -- ticks are no fun! A good natural repellent with essential oils like cedarwood, eucalyptus, or geranium can go a long way. If she can't find a pre-made option, they're super easy to DIY: just mix a few drops of your favorite "pungent" oils (like lemongrass, lavender, rosemary, mint, clove, citronella, or the ones mentioned above) with water and witch hazel/vinegar.

Wearing a hat, long sleeves, and tucking pants into socks also helps keep ticks off -- and light-colored clothes make them easier to spot. Most importantly, a quick tick check every night is key (especially behind the ears, under the arms, and along the hairline). Staying on trails and out of tall grass helps, too... but good luck telling that to an 11 y/o 😉

As an ecosystem ecologist, I’ve spent the last 20 or so years working to keep nutrients like nitrogen out of places they don’t belong, like our water and air. But I’m excited to turn that perspective on its head and think about how to get more good nutrients into food and people where they do belong.

You’ve heard about organic: keeping synthetic chemicals out of your food. And then we have regenerative: producing food in a way that rebuilds depleted soils and ecosystem functions. Now we have nutrient-dense: building on organic and regenerative to show the human nutritional value of those foods. How do we grow more nutrient-dense food? With healthy soils and biodiversity, of course.

In late April, I attended a workshop called “Healthy Food & Healthy Planet” hosted by TomKat Ranch Educational Foundation in Pescadero, California. They brought together ranchers, farmers,…
