Top tips

Hey everyone!

My nephew (11) is going camping with school next month. Can you share any tips for preventing tick bites. His mom is super paranoid and you guys are such a great source of info. Thanks in advance :)

Hi Deborah!

Totally get the concern -- ticks are no fun! A good natural repellent with essential oils like cedarwood, eucalyptus, or geranium can go a long way. If she can't find a pre-made option, they're super easy to DIY: just mix a few drops of your favorite "pungent" oils (like lemongrass, lavender, rosemary, mint, clove, citronella, or the ones mentioned above) with water and witch hazel/vinegar.

Wearing a hat, long sleeves, and tucking pants into socks also helps keep ticks off -- and light-colored clothes make them easier to spot. Most importantly, a quick tick check every night is key (especially behind the ears, under the arms, and along the hairline). Staying on trails and out of tall grass helps, too... but good luck telling that to an 11 y/o 😉
