It started with a mystery in Connecticut…

The Lyme disease story begins in the mid-1970s, when a group of children and adults in Lyme, Connecticut, began experiencing unusual symptoms: swollen knees, skin rashes, and flu-like illness that wouldn’t go away. Many were misdiagnosed with juvenile arthritis or other autoimmune conditions.

It wasn’t until 1981 that scientist Dr. Willy Burgdorfer identified the culprit: a spiral-shaped bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi, spread through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (commonly called deer ticks). That discovery changed everything—but not nearly fast enough.

A Silent Epidemic Spreads

Since then, Lyme disease has exploded across the U.S, particularly in the Northeast, Midwest and now into areas that never used to report cases. Today, it is estimated that nearly half a million people are infected with Lyme disease each year—and that number is likely underreported.

Worse still? Many patients are still misdiagnosed or dismissed, especially when their symptoms don’t line up with the textbook version of Lyme or when standard blood tests come back negative.
